Chinese Ecological Practices from the Perspective of Foster's Theory of Metabolic Rift

  • John Bellamy Foster delves deeply into the philosophical foundation and ecological implications of Marx's theory of "metabolic rift", establishing its central position in the ecological critique of Marxism. With distinct contemporary relevance, this theory exposes how ecological imperialism exacerbates global ecological crises through crisis shifting, a problem that cannot be fundamentally resolved within the framework of capitalism. Foster advocates a moral revolution to reshape social relations of production and address humanity's ecological dilemmas at their roots. Despite its theoretical limitations, his thought provides an intellectual reference for China in overcoming its own ecological challenges. Based on its national conditions, China has reconstructed its value foundation through the concept of ecological civilizationt, advanced the Beautiful China initiative via systematic governance, and consolidated long-term safeguards through institutional reform. It has thus explored a practical path from "metabolic rift" to "metabolic restoration", contributing Chinese wisdom to building a shared beautiful homeland for humanity.
