Abstract:
Liang Xi, the 4th president of the Chinese Society of Agriculture before 1949, played a pivotal role in editing the
Journal of the Chinese Society of Agriculture and founding the
Communication Newsletter of the Chinese Society of Agriculture. He proposed the philosophy of "no journal, no society". However, for a long time, research on Liang Xi's journal publishing practices has not received much attention from the academic community. From the perspective of editorial and publishing , and through sorting out relevant historical materials, we can reveal Liang Xi play a role as a "publisher". The practice of 'no journal, no society' encompassed ensuring credibility, publishing on schedule, single-handedly shouldering great hardships to sustain the journal, personally leading by example in actively writing articles, and disseminating scholarship while facilitating academic exchanges. This dedication mirrored his unwavering commitment to 'saving the nation through science'—rising to action, persisting without rest, and forging ahead with long-term dedication. Under the diligent efforts of Liang Xi and his peers in the society, the "Journal" served as a crucial "medium" for disseminating agricultural knowledge, organizing communities, and fostering societal transformation, playing a significant role in the "introduction and adaptation" of modern agricultural knowledge and systems in China. Moreover, the editorial philosophy of "no journal, no society" has become an integral part of Liang Xi's thoughts and spirit, demanding further interpretation and promotion.
