Abstract:
Fenzel,a German forester, is one of the famous foreign experts who has worked in Republic
of China. In the spring of 1927, he was invited to teach in the Department of Forestry at Sun Yat-sen
University by Tai Chi-tao, the president of the university. Besides teaching, he was also in charge of
forest planting in Baiyun Mountain and constructed the first model forestry center there. Due to his
achievement in foresting planting, he was appointed as the deputy director of the Forestry Service
Department of Guangdong Province. He investigated natural forests and drew up forest laws for
Guangdong. He went back to Germany in 1930. Then, in 1932, he came to China for the second time
and taught at Northwest Agricultural and Forestry Academy. He took part in the foundation of forestry
centers there and made great contribution to forestry, soil and water conservation in Shaanxi Province. He
also framed forestation plans for some provinces in northwest China. His footprints were left in many
provinces, such as Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai and Sichuan. He passed
away in Shaanxi and was buried in Lianhu Park of Xi'An. Based on some works of Fenzel and previous
research about him, this paper gives a brief introduction to him to commemorate the great forester.
