The Chronicle of Wang Zhenru:In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of Prof. Wang Zhenru's Birth

  • 摘要: 汪振儒先生作为北京林业大学资深教授, 不仅是我国著名的林业教育家、植物学家、树木生理学家, 而且是我国树木生理学的开拓者和奠基人, 在树木生理和森林生态学领域造诣深厚。他不仅学术上享有崇高的声誉, 而且还是北京林业大学建校的创始人之一, 深受几代北林人的爱戴。他以101岁高龄仙逝, 以一个世纪的人生历程, 见证了中国林业科学从近代到现代的曲折发展过程, 同时也伴随着北京林业大学从无到有, 从艰苦创业到外迁解散, 再到复校发展并迎来新世纪的全部事件, 为北京林业大学从零开始发展壮大并能够在国内外拥有今天的学术地位做出了不可磨灭的巨大贡献。可以说, 他的个人历史就是中国林业科学发展近现代史的缩影, 总结整理汪先生的人生经历, 尤其是他在林业科学研究和教育方面的事迹, 对研究中国林业发展史具有很重要的价值。他1908年生于北京, 1929年毕业于清华大学生物系, 是清华大学第一届毕业生, 之后在中国科学社生物研究所工作和清华大学、广西大学任教, 1935年赴美留学, 1936年和1939年先后获得康奈尔大学森林学硕士和杜克大学哲学博士学位。1939年回国后, 他一直从事高等院校的教学与科研工作, 先后担任广西大学农学院、北京大学农学院、北京农业大学、北京林业大学教授, 编写了中国第一部林业专业适用的《植物生理学讲义》, 精通英、德、俄、日、拉丁语并编译和审定了《德汉林业名词》《英汉林业科技词典》《日汉林业科技词典》和《林学名词》, 翻译了有影响的植物生理学方面论著《树木生理学》《木本植物生理学》, 他是我国林学专业第一个具有博士学位授予权的博士生导师, 并培养了我国林业界自己培养的第一位博士何平; 担任《中国植物学杂志》 (复刊)主编, 《生物学通报》 《北京林学院学报》《森林与人类》首任主编和《林业科学》副主编。汪振儒在我国林学、森林生态学、植物生理学领域具有极高的学术威望, 他一个世纪的人生历程, 见证了从中华民国到中华人民共和国的巨变, 见证了中国植物学、树木生理学、森林生态学的发展历程, 也见证了中国高等林业教育的发展。

     

    Abstract: As a senior professor of Beijing Forestry University, Mr. WANG Zhen-ru is not only a famous forestry educationalist, botanist and tree physiologist in China, but also a pioneer and founder of tree physiology in China, and has profound attainments in the field of tree physiology and forest ecology. As one of the founders of Beijing Forestry University, Prof. Wang enjoys a high academic reputation and is esteemed by several generations of Beijing Forestry University people. He died at the age of 101 and witnessed the unsmooth development of China's forestry sciences from the early modern times to the modern era in the course of a century. At the same time, his life is accompanied by almost all the development events of Beijing Forestry University from nothing, from the hard pioneering work at the very beginning to the outward migration, dissolution, and to the re-establishment and embracing the 21th century. He has made tremendous contributions to the development of Beijing Forestry University as well as its academic status in the world. In a word, Prof. Wang's life is an epitome of modern and contemporary history of China's forestry science development. Therefore, an overall summary of Prof. Wang's life experience, especially his important events in forestry science research and education, is of great value to the study of China's forestry development history. He was born in Beijing in 1908 and graduated from the Department of Biology of Tsinghua University in 1929, as one of the first graduates of this university. Then he worked one after another for the Biological Institute of the Science Society of China, Tsinghua University and Guangxi University. He successfully applied to a US college and went there in 1935. Afterwards, he received the Master's degree of forestry science from Cornell University in 1936 and Ph. D from Duke University in 1939, and returned to China in 1939. Since then, he had been engaged in teaching and scientific research in universities. He served ever as a professor in the Agricultural College of Guangxi University, the Agricultural College of Peking University, Beijing Agricultural University, and Beijing Forestry University. He wrote The Lecture on Plant Physiology which is the first textbook suitable for forestry major in China. He is proficient in English, German, Russian, Japanese, and Latin languages, and compiled and examined German-Chinese Forestry Terms, English-Chinese Forestry Science and Technology Dictionary, Japanese-Chinese Forestry Science and Technology Dictionary and Forestry Terms and translated influential works on plant physiology such as Tree Physiology and Woody Plant Physiology. As the first group of doctoral advisors of forestry science, he tutored China's first Ph. D student of forestry science as He Ping. He took the position as chief editor of Journal of Botany, the first chief editor of Journal of Biology, Journal of Beijing Forestry College, Forest and Human and the deputy chief editor of Scientia Silvae Sinicae. WANG Zhenru has high academic prestige in the fields of forestry, forest ecology and plant physiology in China. For one century, he witnessed the great changes in the Republic of China (1912—1949) to the People's Republic of China, the development of China's botany, tree physiology and forest ecology, as well as the development of China's higher education of forestry.
