A Pictorial Research on the Evolution of Breeze-ruffled Lotus Beside the Winery

Abstract: This paper will take the scenic spot of Breeze-ruffled Lotus Beside the Wineryin Hangzhou as our research object, and use both historical documents and image data including landscape paintings, woodcut paintings, photographs and measured drawings to comb its history of landscape pattern evolution, analyze the connections among sceneries, and summarize the development of landscape architecture in each period. Its development course was divided into 4 periods: the Quyuan period in Southern Song Dynasty, the decadent period from Yuan to Ming Dynasty, relocation and re-construction period in Qing Dynasty, and park period from the foundation of the People's Republic of China to the present day. We conclude that the relocation and renaming of the winery was an important turning point for the scenic development during the reign of Emperor Kang Xi of Qing Dynasty, which allows the name of ancient scenes to be lasting, brings new connotation and extends development space for the scene. Its architecture and landscape design were expanded based on the theme of zigzag, and the man-made winery and natural breeze-ruffled lotus reflects the aesthetic purport of attaching equal importance to both artificial buildings and natural scenery. At last, we conclude that analyzing and sorting out the historical images may significantly assist people today in their understanding of the evolution of ancient gardens.
